Campus Landscape and
Tribute Garden Funds
Under the direction of noted landscape
architect John Vittum, Sumner on Ridgewood is about to
embark on our first major
project since moving to our new
campus three years ago. Vittum-Andrew Associates, Inc. have
designed a five-year plan that will enhance the residential
feel of the campus and have a significant impact on both the
Independent Living and Health Care areas.
The first thrust of the project is
two-fold. Due to a generous gift from a member of the Board
of Directors, improvements have already begun to the island
in front of the Manor House. Visualize a corridor of stately
Red Oaks surrounded by lush
groundcover introducing the way
to the front entrance. Imagine Honeylocust and Katsura trees
framing the Garden Apartments and welcoming visitors. The
improved landscaping will enhance the architecture and exude
an aura of hospitality and graciousness in keeping with the
Sumner tradition. Once the first area is completed, other
areas of the campus at large will be targeted. Contributions
for these areas will be set aside in the Campus Landscape
Fund.
Major work is also set to begin in
front of the Health Care buildings. The Akron Community
Foundation has contributed a grant to begin construction of
the Louise Sumner Tribute
Garden. The plan calls for the
circular area in front of the assisted living and nursing
buildings to be turned into a verdant oasis with lovely,
shady walkways and perennial beds. An area for relaxation
and sensory stimulation celebrating the noble goals of
founder Louise Sumner, the Tribute Garden will be accessible
to all residents and will become a focal point for the
entire campus. Contributions for this area will be
designated to the Tribute Garden Fund.

The Arthur L. Sutton
Endowment
The Arthur L. Sutton Endowment was established by the family of Art and
Evelyn Sutton before Art's death in January 2004.
As one of the original Founders of
Ridgewood's Independent Living, Art was instrumental in creating and leading the
Sumner on Ridgewood Residents' Association. He wished to create this endowment
that supports the communities of the Association as well as intergenerational
projects with Copley-Fairlawn High School students. Numerous gifts have been
made to this endowment in Art's memory.
